Outlook XP sometimes does not start

Occasionally (perhaps 1 in 4 tries), Outlook 2002 (XP)
will not start. On clicking on the icon, there is a
pause with the cursor turning to an hourglass for a
couple of seconds and then returning to the normal arrow.

If I go to Windows Task Manager, Processes Tab, and shut
down all instances of Outlook.exe, Outlook will then
start with a message saying that it did not shut down
properly the last time and asking if I would like to open
it in Safe Mode. If I answer "no", Outlook then opens
normally. I have not noticed any relationship between
occurrences of the failure to start and anything else I
have been doing on the computer just before that.

I am using a new Dell P4 computer with Windows XP
Professional.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Do you have any software that accesses Outlook such as a PDA in its cradle,
or fax software, or Franklin Covey PlanPlus, or any antivirus software set
to scan your emails?

I do not have a PDA. I do have Winfax and Norton AV, but
I have been using both for a long time without any
problems. This problem just started a couple of weeks
ago. I have not changed any settings.
