3 months ago I had a problem with outlook 2003 my Win 2000 system. Outlook
ran fine for months and then started giving errors when started. At first
it would start then error when I tried top open a mail, then over a coupe
of day it deteriorated to a point that it would not open at all, even in
safe mode. I reinstalled Outlook to no avail then reinstalled Win2000
(overlayed the old installation) and that didn;t work so I had to reinstall
a fresh copy of 2000. IT finally worked after that.

It's been 3 months now and it is starting again. Outlook is issuing errors
at startup again as described above but I also get similar errors if I
start Outlook Express, Yahoo messenger and MS Messenger

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Microsoft Outlook has encountered a problem and needs to close.

AppName: outlook.exe AppVer: 10.0.2627.1 ModName: user32.dll
ModVer: 5.0.2195.1600 Offset: 00020c58

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Outlook Express (I know that the Appname is messenger but that is from
Express)
AppName: msnmsgr.exe AppVer: 6.0.0.268 ModName: user32.dll
ModVer: 5.0.2195.1600 Offset: 00020c58

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MS Messenger and Yahoo messenger both fail with a "XXX had caused errors
and will be closed"

I reinstalled MS mesanger 6.0 but have the same results

Opera works fine as do other email programs.

If I boot into a different partition and access the PST files with another
installation of Outlook, everything is fine

Everything else works fine and I scanned with the latest AVG definitions

Any ideas what is wrong?

Hi Bill,

Servicepacks are not only to fix specific problems with the product but are
also there for security reasons. Also when you don't apply servicepacks your
problem might not even be recognised because Microsoft only supports the
latest servicepacks and the one before that. New problems could arrise but
they will be fixed as soon as they are discovered. Keep in mind that when
you install a servicepack you'll have a more grown up version of your
product so a more stable one as well with less flaws in it.

Still I strongly recommend you to install the servicepacks and see if the
problem persists. If they do check back and I'll be more than happy to help
you.

user32.dll is part of the security library - search the drive for it (use
Advanced options to search hidden files and folders and system files) and
see if all copies are the same version. You should have at least 2 copies of
it, maybe 3.

how much memory does your system have?
have you tried removing AVG?
do you have other AV software installed?

Roady,

I truely appreciate the input but I hesitate to install service packs unless
there is a specific fix for my specific problem. It's kind of like
replacing your car engine instead of fixing it. You may be aquiring NEW
problems rather than fixing the current.

regards

Bill

On the problem partition, there are 2 versions, one from
December 07, 1999, 7:00:00 AM (ver 5.0.2180.1)
In:
WINNT\$NtServicePackUninstall$

There is also a version:
July 07, 2000, 2:05:02 PM, (ver 5.0.2195.1600)
WINNT\system32
WINNT\system32\dllcache
WINNT\ServicePackFiles\i386

I replaced the 2000 version with the 1999 version in:
winnt\system32
winnt\system32\dllcache

This did not fix the problem

On the working partition, there is only 1 version
December 07, 1999, 7:00:00 AM (ver 5.0.2180.1)
In:
WINNT\system32
WINNT\system32\dllcache

The user32.dll from the first time this problem occurred was dated May 03,
2001, 11:05:02 PM (ver 5.0.2195.2821)

My system is a Toshiba Tecra 8000 with 128MB ram
AVG was installed after the problem started so I have not uninstalled it
I have McAfee installed but not running

I have tried to stop all non critical processes but this did not resolve the
problem.

Does this help?
