I've got got a problem which Office XP on an older computer that
belongs to my mother.

It was taking a long time to load each day so I tried turning on
Autoarchive. Weeks later I realized it was not working.

There is a group of several hundred messages in the inbox that are the
oldest messages there. They cannot be deleted or moved to another
folder. It just pops up a little error message that tells me to try
to restart Outlook.

I've tried doing a repair on Office XP but that did not help.

I've moved all of the movable messages to a temporary folder. Is it
safe to delete inbox and then try to create a new inbox? Any other
suggestions on how to deal with a corrupted inbox?

With OL closed try running the repair tool, scanpst.exe on the data file -
run it several times
What size is the pst/data file?

I tried that repeatedly but no luck. Now I can't even receive any
mail so the whole thing is screwed up. I'm getting error message
0x80040600 and the solution for that according to Microsoft is to do
what you said... run the scan program but that isn't helping.

Does "Outlook.PST" also include your address book or just the messages
themselves? I could perhaps afford to lose all my messages but I need
to find a way to archive the address book first.

By the way Outlook.PST is about 210 MB.

Outlook has no address book. The PST contains all Outlook data: mail,
contacts, calendar, tasks, notes, etc. The Outlook Address Book is just a
view of your Contacts folder.

You could try this;
In OL, export your mail & Addressess to OE - check in OE if they are there &
OK
Then with OL closed, use the mail applet in the Control Panel to create a
new Profile, add a *new* data file (do not add the old data file), configure
& test accounts.
Then in OE export mail to the new data file, In OL import addresses
Maybe a work around?

I managed to do something similar to that. I did and export of all of
the uncorrupted message folders and the contacts folder. Made a backup
copy of Outlook.PST and then renamed it to junk_outlook.PST. Deleted
the user. Re-created the user and imported back in everything. That
was probably more than necessary but at least it's working now.

Thanks to everyone in this forum who offered suggestions.
