I use Outlook 2000 as my mail program and IE6 as my
browser. Recently I've run into trouble. When I read mail
that has a link to a web page, IE won't open. If I open
IE first and then click on the link in the Outlook mail
item the link takes me to the browser OK.

In Windows Explorer, go to View | Folder Options | File Types and check the
values for URL:Hypertext Transfer Protocol (click edit, open, edit). The
values should read:

application:

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\iexplore.exe" -nohome
(Check the path to iexplore.exe to make sure that is correct)

DDE should be checked and in the boxes below it you should have:

#1:
"%1",,-1,0,,,,
#2
IExplore
#3 (blank)

#4
WWW_OpenURL

NOTE: The above applies to Win9x. For WinMe, Win2000, and WinXP, use Tools |
Folder Options or Control Panel | Folder Options to access the file types.
Then edit the OPEN action for the file type. The actual values specified
above are the same for each Operating System.

If you find that the above process is set correctly, and you still have
problems, then go to Start | Run and type

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

and see if that fixes the problem.

Many thanks PABear you solved it. I caused the trouble
when I temporarily renamed the explorer executable
from .exe to .zzz in an attempt to email it past some
anti-virus software. This temp renaming changed the File
Type "open" to .zzz as well.
Again thank you,
Frank

Further to the instructions given - I make the changes to
the file type, it works once, and then reverts back to
the wrong file name.
I've edited etc. but changes won't stay

Does [iexplore.exe?] revert back to what you'd renamed it previously?

Check your system for "hijackware":

http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm

You *must* seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each and every
use, even "right out of the box". But even then, they can't catch
everything. HijackThis (http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip; [new
URL] ) is the preferred tool to use these days. It will help to both
identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post your files to
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ for expert analysis, not here.**

Also update your virus definitions and then run a full system scan. From
now on, do both daily.[/QUOTE]
