There has got to be some Windows Update patch that is causing our Outlook
clients not to shutdown. We have ~15 people who are running a mix of
Windows 2000 / Windows XP with either Outlook 2000 or Outlook 2003
installed. When you select Exit and Logoff from the Outlook menu, it will
just sit there forever without shutting down.

Any Ideas?

Nope! Removed ALL Add-ins and there are no PDA's or anything like that
attached. It is kinda weird that several machines are experiencing this
problem.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Check your add-ins first and see if they need to be updated. Also check
whether you have uncradled your PDA before closing Outlook or your
synchronisation software will not let go of the Outlook.exe process;

Locate the srs-file for your profile and rename it to .old when Outlook is
closed. See if it works now.

If this didn't solve it; does it work when you start Outlook in safe mode?

Hello Fred,

I had the EXACT Same Problem! Heres the cause and solution
which took me hours of research:

Subject: Outlook 2000/2003 Bug: "Please wait while
Microsoft Outlook exits"

Hello All,
Just to make you aware. If you open your mailbox in
Outlook 2003 and then open it in Outlook 2000 it will hang
on exit and the only way to close it down is to kill
outlook.exe from task manager. This also occurs if you are
using Outlook 2000 and someone with Outlook 2003 views
your shared calender.

Reasons:

When you use Outlook 2003 to access a mailbox, two changes
occur to that mailbox:
1) A new folder is created called "Junk E-mail" (Cosmetic
and not the cause of the problem)
2) An extra field is added to your Calendar that did not
exist in OL2000 (this is where the problem occurs as 2000
does not know what to do with it)

This is briefly mentioned (without reasons) on the
Microsoft Knowledge Base: http://support.microsoft.com/?
kbid=834005 I have contacted Microsoft Product Support and
have a patch to fix this if it occurs to you. If you are
experiencing this problem please let me know and I'll
provide you with this fix.

Thanks,

Thanks,
Adarsh
