I have access to WEB OUTLOOK at home. In the message area to type text, is a
little box with an 'X" in it. The entire message box is highlighted in blue
and prevents me from typing text. This error also occurs when I reply to an
e-mail.

Please advise.

Hi David--

Are you connected in any way to MSFT Exchange server in your use of OL?
Also it's helpful in solving Office/OL problems to know the ***version of OL
you're using with Vista.

See this MSKB that should help with your OL web access and email replies and
in addition be aware that many of us have seen Antivirus or Antivirus
provided firewalls and spam scanners that have a checkbox for scanning OL
and OE interfere with sending and receiving and that is a known issue to the
MFST Outlook team.

OL2002: (IMO) Message Text Is Replaced with Red x's in Message Body (OS's
prior to Vista but the .dll may be relevant)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318655/en-us

You receive an error message when you try to perform any editing tasks, or
you must click to enable the compose frame in Outlook Web Access

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/911829/en-us

Symptom 1
On a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Vista, you cannot perform
any editing tasks that you typically expect to perform. For example, you
cannot perform the following tasks: . Compose a new e-mail message
. Reply to an e-mail message
. Create a new contact, task, note, journal entry, or appointment
. Change any configuration in the Outlook Web Access options folder

Additionally, you may receive an error message when you try to perform
these tasks.

CAUSE
Symptom 1
This behavior occurs because Windows Vista no longer includes support for
the ActiveX control that is used for HTML editing in Outlook Web Access.

David--

I have another possibility for you to try. Since one of the MSKBs granted
not for Vista specifically but most of them haven't been written yet, and
for OL 2002 implicates a corruption in Mlang.dll file, I think you have
everything to gain and nothing to lose by doing these five things:

1) Run SFC System File checker and it may replace a potentially corrupted
..dll with an intact one.

Run it this way: i

www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html

Do the regedits so that it points to your HD in case there have been updates
for your unnamed build of Vista or your unnamed version of Outlook.

2) Try to reregister the .dll by putting up your run box (Win Key +R) and in
the run box type:

regsvr32 Mlang.dll and hit enter.

The context for the first two is the information in this MSKB: (Often MSKBs
apply to more than the version named but since you didn't name it, nor the
Vista build I'm guessing at both):

OL2002: (IMO) Message Text Is Replaced with Red x's in Message Body (OS's
prior to Vista but the .dll may be relevant)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318655/en-us

Cause: This behavior can occur if the Mlang.dll file has been corrupted.

3) Try doing detect and repair on Outlook this way:

Open up Outlook>Help>Detect and Repair

4) Try several system restore points if necessary.

5) Use Win RE's Startup Repair:

How to Use Startup Repair:

***Accessing Windows RE (Repair Environment):***

1) Insert Media into PC (the DVD you burned)

2) ***You will see on the Vista logo setup screen after lang. options in the
lower left corner, a link called "System Recovery Options."***

Screenshot: (Click first option "Startup Repair"
http://www.leedesmond.com/images/img_vista02ctp-installSysRecOpt2.bmp

3) Select your OS for repair.

4) Its been my experience that you can see some causes of the crash from
theWin RE feature:

You'll have a choice there of using:

1) Startup Repair
2) System Restore
3) Complete PC Restore

Good luck,
