James,
What Anti-Virus program are you using?
What version of Windows are you using?
(Please forgive me if I don't make any sense, it's very
early in the morning and I'm still asleep)
The virus is built into a website, so when you view a site
such as a warez site or looking for some help on
programming, the malicious code is installed onto your
system in the Temporary Internet Folders, for example the
virus you have received.
If you are running Windows 2000 or Windows XP reset your
machine and as soon as the bios starts up start pressing
the function key F8 which will take you to a menu. From
here choose "Safe Mode" without networking (If on a
network) - Disconnect all network adapters in case the
Virus starts floating around. If everything goes to plan
successfully run your antivirus suite to scan all files
again. These will delete the files. It is recommended to
boot into the pc's admin profile to delete the files.
If this doesn't work two programs that I use are Tauscan
1.6, the sole purpose of this suite is to remove and
prevent Trojan viruses and the spy-ware package I use is
Spybot Search & Destroy. Keep away from Lavasoft Ad-Aware
6.0+ (my opinion) is that this acts as a virus in itself
when used with packages such as Norton's.
If you are using MS Outlook or MS Outlook Express the
preview pane acts as a web browser so you can view HTML
messages, thus activating the on load or on preview code
to initiate the viral string.
I hope this is of some use.. For further related
information on utilities to remove Trojan's go to
www.symantec.com and do search on the Netdex virus and it
will tell you step by step how to remove it and what
utilities if needed is to run.
Yours truly,
Steven North
-----Original Message-----
I am a long time user of the old Outlook Express 5 and as
of recently someone has done something interesting to the
version of Outlook I am running. Whenever I try to send a
new mail my internet server lights light up like I was
downloading something and I get the following error
message: C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5
\K9MRWTYJ\banner[1] has been infected with the
Backdoor.Netdex virus - as it is in Windows it is write
protected and my antivirus program cannot quarantine or
delete it. Somehow whenever I click on new mail I am
getting a download or accessing a web page without a web
browser running and constantly downloading this virus.
What could a remote user have done to my machine to make
this happen? All advice accepted gratefully.
