Outlook very slow starting up

When starting Outlook with Windows 2000 Professional, it
has become very slow, sometimes hanging indefinitely with
nothing happening, other times opening a window and
starting to download messages but hanging 3-5+ minutes.
The most frequent problem is that it usually starts to
churn (I see hardrive light up) when it goes to retrieve
messages, then after a long wait either hangs completely,
or more often, the small envelope icon appears (several
minutes) and then eventually downloads the emails and is
usable again. This is getting progressively worse over the
last couple months.

First, try emptying the deleted items folder. Next, archive the old
messages. This will break up the .pst files into two separate ones, and the
one you use mainly will be smaller. As such, it'll probably respond a lot
faster.
