I've installed Outlook 2003 but I keep gettinf a pop-up asking for a
postoffice and mailbox names. How are these formatted? Or how can I delete?

It sounds like Microsoft Mail is installed. Look in Tools | Accounts | View
or change existing email accounts and remove that service. you possibly
don't need it.

Looked in Tools | Accts. etc and the only accounts there are my POP3
accounts. But I did the following...do you have any ideas what this problem
is all about?

In the dialog box "MS Mail" I entered "\\windows\ for Postoffice(network
location) and the name of my PC per the instructions for MS Exchange Server.
That allowed me access to Outlook finally. Now i"m receiving an Error
0x8004210A. I've searched for a fix on line but seems as though MS help goes
in circles and really does not say what the problem is or how to fix it.

try making a new profile and see if the error goes away.

Let's back up-- OS Windows 2000; Norton IS & Antivirus
I've got an icon to install Outlook 5 but if I try I receive an error RE:
msoe.dll. I researched and found the file on my harddrive. I follow the
instruction from Microsoft web KB, a dialog window opens wanting to know
where to install the file. I point to the file where OL5 is located and I'm
told can't do. Long & short-won't install. There is also OL6 that comes
with IE, that will not install. No response from icon.

I purchased OL2003, installed no problem but would not openwithout the
following. When I first tried to open I received a dialog box title MS
Mail. It asked for Postoffice, mailbox names and password. I researched MS
KB and found that the info requested was network location. Also said that
default was \\windows\ and computer name (workgroups). So I used the default
and my PC name since I have a home network w/DSL. This allowed me to access
OL, I created my email accts (hotmail and yahoo) Rec'd error 0x8004210A;
timed out I extending time to 2 mins. Don't work.

BillR suggested that I don't need MS Mail. Icons and other items in the
folder will not delete nor will they install again to be removed. Now what

Diane suggested creating a new profile. I tried and received the same
dialog box asking for postoffice and mailbox info.

Now what Extactly what is the format for the postoffice and mailbox name?
I'm considering backing up all my personal files to CDs and reformating the
hard-drive. Will reformating fix/remove the older versions of outlook?
Please be move specific in your responses, thanks. Oh, I saw a response
concerning Norton IS and I've disabled scanning of emails. Didn't help.

Oh, Diane, I liked your site outlook-tips.

Thanks
Starlady

You shouldn't have a MS Mail post office to connect to, unless you added it
to your profile. You shouldn't even have any of the post office stuff on the
computer - Outlook 2003 removes it. Reformatting will remove the old
programs, provided you don't install them again. :)

Before you reformat, find and rename C:\Program Files\Common
Files\System\MSMAPI\1033\mapisvc.inf - infact, search for and delete all
copies of it that are on your drive. Go to C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\OFFICE11\ADDINS and rename MSFSMENU.ECF and MSFSPROP.ECF. Go to
Control panel, Mail and delete all profiles from the computer. Next, run
detect and repair from any office program.

Hi Diane,

I searched files per your directions & found 3 mapisvc.inf files. You are
advising me to delete these files? I did not locate the msfsmenu or msfsprop
files, could that be part of my problem?

delete or rename the two that are not in the folder path below. Open the one
that is (using notepad) and see if it contains the lines found at
http://www.outlook-tips.net/howto/msmail.htm (it should not).

the other two are needed for msmail to work and you should not have them
unless you upgraded from an older version.
