Outlook stores all of your e-mail messages and contacts in a pst file. To
find out where the file is located, open Outlook. On the Outlook menu
select File, Data File Management. That will contain a list of your
Outlook data files, along with their location. If using a newer version of
Outlook, there will also be a button called Open Folder that will open the
folder containing the selected data file.

Do you really mean Outlook, or are you using Outlook EXPRESS? The two are
completely different programs and use completely different files so it's
very important that you tell us precisely which one you are using.

Sorry Outlook express!

In that case, Export will only Export to Exchange Messaging or Outlook.
In OE, go to Tools-Options-Maintenance-Store Folder and that will tell you
where your files are stored.
Copy the WHOLE directory over to a new folder on your new machine.
Then open OE on your new machine, and do an import.

HTH

That is not true!!!

Hi Mike,

I have used this method for years. If the Win98 machine/OS is still
accessible: Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT

Locate the following 4 branches of the Registry

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Account Manager
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\WAB\WAB4\Wab File Name

Right click on each branch above and select Export and save the REG files to
you a floppy disk.

For each account you want to have the same mail settings, log into that
account. Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT. Locate the
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities branch, right click it and select Delete.
Next open Windows Explorer and locate the 4 REG files you saved above.
Double click each one and answer yes to the import prompt.

Now you can open OE in any of the User accounts, and all the settings,
accounts, will be the same.

Note: You will need to re-enter the passwords for mail and news group
accounts.

Note2: If you use Signatures, you should put them in a text file and change
OE's settings to use them. Signatures are often corrupted during the
import. This is due to the Unicode storage of the signatures in the
Registry.

Otherwise:

Close OE. Then go to Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/View/Show Hidden
files and folders. Then do a Search for *.dbx...Open OE/File/Import. Be
sure to set search options to search hidden files, folders and system
folders. Inbox is under a hidden folder.

Are you saying the method I proposed won't work? because if you are then
THAT is not true either. Because it DOES work. All the OP asked was how to
transfer emails - nothing about settings.

True. But if the other person had to ask how to transfer files in the first
place, surely it was courtesy to tell them how to transfer everything,
settings and all. How more delighted to be able to simply open OE in XP and
discover it is all there.

This is from someone who has just transferred everything from MS Outlook
2000 from Windows 98se to XP, and was delighted to only have to re-enter
email account details. Everything else survived the move.

But my point is, the MVP should NOT have posted "that is not true" when my
reply palpably WAS true.

RUBBISH! WHAT A LOAD OF COBBLERS! My reply works for OUTLOOK EXPRESS not
OUTLOOK!
And the OP asked about MAIL ONLY which is what I told him how to do.
How did you get your MVP? Lucky dip?

And in fact, the method I proposed is almost EXACTLY the same as can be
found on Tom Kock's Inside OE site - for backup and restore of MAIL FOLDERS.
Are you saying that Tom's method is "not true" as well?

Come on - reply. I want to know WHY you decided to tell the world that a
perfectly valid method of transferring OE mail from one machine to another
was "not true".

It's been almost 12 hours now. Are you afraid to admit your post was hasty
and out of order?

Oh Jesus....chill out. He wanted to 'transfer' his mail and I gave him the
keys to do so. Replying that it couldn't be 'exported', is technically not
true. Using the Export function, then yes it only applies to Exchange and
Outlook.

Well I suggest YOU chill out and READ posts before jumping to conclusions.
Don't get so effing arrogant.

Have a "very" nice day, Gordon.
