Hello,

I am running Outlook XP with all the current updates. I'm
having a problem regarding the Select Names List which
can be accessed by clicking the To: button on new email
messages. When this dialog box is invoked, it will freeze
the entire application. By clicking START in the Windows
toolbar and going back to the application, it will
unfreeze.

What can I do to resolve this problem?

Not much to go on here. Need more information. Did the Outlook address book
ever work? If so, when did it stop? Have you changed your configuration in
any way? Does it work from the Toolbar?
Have you tried removing the Outlook Address Book Service, restarting
Outlook, and adding it back?

It has worked. I did download some critical updates from
Microsoft though. I'm not quite sure if that was the
problem. I've reinstalled outlook several times, but I
will try removing the Address Book Service though.

In that case, here are some other things to try first:
1. Examine all the Contacts that would appear on the initial screen in the
address book and see if any has a corrupt address.
2. Run Detect and Repair.
3. Run the Inbox Repair Tool on your PST file.

I have done all these things. I've reinstalled Outlook,
even created a new blank address book with test contacts.
The same problem occurs.

I restarted my computer, and out of the blue, it started
working again. About 3 hours later, outlook started having
the same problem I had.

What is going on?

No way to know. It's a common problem but Microsoft claims they cannot
reproduce it so they have no solution.
Are your video drivers up to date?
