Hi All,

Within the last week my daily backups have been failing with a report
saying Outlook.pst couldn't be read or verified. I've since tried
copying the file to a different folder (both with Copy and XCopy as
well as via Windows Explorer). I've also tried using WinZip to add
the file to an archive. All of this is done when Outlook is closed.
the pst file is only about 500 mb.

The DOS copy and xcopy commands both gives an error "Data Error
(cyclic redundancy check)".

I'm using Outlook 2000 on Windows XP Pro.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

run a chkdsk on the hard drive. (you might have a failing hard drive or a
few bad clusters that the *.pst file is sitting on.) follow up with
scanpst.exe on the pst file to ensure it is in good health.

I ran ChkDsk C: /F and then ScanPst. ScanPst fails with the error "An
unexpected error prevented access to the file. Use ScanDisk to check
the disk for errors, and then try using the Inbox Repair Tool again.".
I don't have ScanDisk on my machine.

The funny thing is that Outlook seems to be able to use the pst file
with no problems. I just can't back it up or copy it.

try a chkdsk c: /r (this should net a message that it has to be scheduled
for the next boot). once done, don't start any apps and go straight to
scanpst.exe. if you get an error at this point, then look for third party
applications that try to use outlook data.
