Somehow Outlook is broken. When I try to open it, I get the message that
outlook.pst cannot be found. I think that is the file for the contacts.
Then when I click on the contacts Icon, I get a message that says "unable to
display folder. folder no longer exists." So I tried re-installing Outlook
from my Office97 CD rom, and I still get the same error. I don't seem to be
able to re-install or fix this file. I even tried creating a file called
outlook.pst, and that didn't help either. I have most of the data in
Outlook Express and want to import it back to Outlook so that I can create a
file and print out formatted lists. I don't know why Microsoft didn't
include a print option like this in Outlook Express, but that's a question
for another newsgroup!

Start at the beginning, please. The part before "somehow Outlook is broken."
We can't fix it if we don't know how you broke it. The PST file contains all
of your Outlook data. Outlook will not lose its connection to its data for
no reason. Only you can provide that clue.

I'm not quite sure what I did. I had some problems with my computer; took
it into the shop. Played around with it myself. All I want to do is get
Outlook back. Regardless of what I did, I would think I could reinstall it!

Reinstalling Outlook would not restore your data. However, nothing short of
a reformat of your hard drive would lose your data. Search your hard drive
for *.pst files. Open each in Outlook until you find your data.

I have Outlook 97. When I open it, I get error message "unable to open
default mail folders. The file c:\windows\outlook.pst could not be found."
I click OK and get another message asking "would you like to open your
default File System instead?" I click yes, and I get an Outlook screen with
"My Computer" files listed in the window. I click on "contacts" and get
another message saying unable to open folder. This happened both before and
after I re-installed from my Office97 CD.

So, as we peel back the layers of the onion contained in "somehow Outlook is
broken" we find there is a lot more to this story. We can't fix it until you
tell us how you broke it. Start at the beginning. Leave nothing out. Just
how did you get to this point and where is your original PST file?

Frankly, I'm not sure just how I got to this onion! I think it happened
when I tried to copy my outlook files from my desktop to my laptop. Somehow
I ended up with them on neither. But regardless of how I got into this
mess, why can't I re-install Outlook? Forgot about the data; I just want
the application. Re-installing doesn't seem to change anything. I tried
removing it first before re-installing, but Outlook by itself does not seem
to appear on the list of applications in the add/remove programs list. I
suppose I could remove all of Microsoft Office and re-install, but I'm
hesitant to do that.

What makes you think you can't reinstall Outlook? You may be reinstalling
Outlook just fine, but what I'm saying is that reinstalling Outlook wouldn't
fix this if Outlook is still trying to start using a Profile that can't find
it's information store. What you need to do is find your PST file, then
repair your Outlook profile so it can find it's information store. (Control
Panel > Mail).
