Outlook.pst has reached its maximum size?

This message keeps popping up on the screen whenever I try to move emails or
do anything with outlook. Also email will not send. " C:\Documents and
settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst has reached its maximum size. To reduce
the amount of data in this file, select some items that you no longer need,
then permanently (shift + del) delete them. "

What should I do to fix this & also prevent this in future?

Thanks.

I don't know what version I'm using. I think its outlook 2003.
I compressed the .pst file a little and when I started to archive my various
folders everthing started to work again.

If you click Help -> About Microsoft Office Outlook, it will tell you
which version you have.

If it is Outlook 2003, you can create a new type PST file, with
practically unlimited file size. After you create the new file, copy
(drag-and-drop) all items from the old PST file to the new one. Close
the old PST file and you should be fine.

Just my luck it is Outlook 2002.... Any tips?

I have this exact same problem! I am using 2007 and I created a new inbox;
HOWEVER, I cannot add or take away anything from my Address Book or Calendar
and I get the same error message AND when I try to delete stuff so maybe that
will work, I am not allowed to. I can access my address book in my new inbox
but it's like it's still part of the old inbox...

Can someone PUHLEEZE help us?

I have this problem too; HOWEVER I have created a new inbox BUT my Address
Book and Contact list are useless. I cannot add anything and I get teh exact
same message. I cannot delete either. it won't allow me to.

What do you mean by "created a new Inbox". If your PST is full, creating
more folders in it is pointless. Is your PST an Outlook 97-2002 PST or a
Unicode PST? How did you create this "new Inbox"? What size does Windows
Explorer report for your PST?

well, what I did was I followed the instructions from the error message and
made a new inbox. then I went into Tools and changed the data source to that
inbox because I could receive but not send. I cant find the size of the .pst
when I searched - just brought up some old emails. I can tell you that I only
have 101 emails in the new box. I would screen shot for you but for some
reason, my control, shift prt scn isn't working!

You're not making a new Inbox. You're making a new PST and changing the
delivery location from the old PST to the new one. It would be unlikely,
though, for this action to fix sending issues when receiving is OK. The
most frequent cause of being able to receive but not send if a
misconfiguration of the outgoing server properties in the mail account.
I cant find the size of the .pst

Use Windows Explorer to browse to the folder containing your PST and then
select it. Explorer will show you its size.

Sigh...I have spent 10 minutes trying to get Explorer to pull up my stupid
pst file. It won't. I am using Vista and i can't seem to find where you can
search for an extension. Again, if my print screen worked, I would show you.

Second, I can send and receive. That's not my issue. My issue is I cannot
make any changes to my address book or my contact list because of the error
message and it won't let me delete anything.

So i need to know how I can Associate (if possible) my address book and
contact list with the new "not an inbox" that i have created that has all of
the folders associated with it and looks exactly like my inbox! Iif this
helps, I have 8,713 message in one inbox and 107 in the "not an inbox" inbox.

I click the Search button and enter ".pst" as the string.

A PST in NOT an "Inbox". Inbox is only one of the folders that can be in a
PST. If you want your other PST to be the delivery location, click
Tools>Account Settings and select the Data Files tab. Select the other PST
and click Set as Default. Click Close. Stop and restart Outlook. Outlook
will create any default folder (Contactrs, Calendar, etc.) that wasn't there
to start with and you'll have the new PST as your default folder set.
