Something wrong with my data file and I want to start
with a clean slate. How do I do this? I did a thorough
computer search and don't have a file called outlook.pst
or any file with a pst extension. I tried uninstalling
Outlook and then reinstalling but it always manages to
find the defective data file.

I use Windows XP and Outlook 2002.

Thanks

inthe control panel. You will need to show all files and
unhide two others then you should be able to use the
Search window. I think Outlook 2000 stores it in the My
Documents folder it is just not viewable until you make
these changes. You will get a caution window when you
uncheck the second unhide option(please read). Most
people would advise you to change these back after you
find your .pst file, so that no one using the computer
accidently alters files that should be hidden.

Thanks, Antony, but I already did this. I looked
manually and then did a complete search in Explorer,
including hidden files. Other ideas?

Question - why are you looking for a pst file if you want
to start with a clean slate? Why don't you just create a
new one from within Outlook?

It's there somewhere. You need to search in hidden and system folders,
not just hidden files. Make sure you have file extensions visible in
Windows Explorer since there are a lot of file with similar filenames,
so it can get really confusing if you can't see the extensions on those
files. If you can still get into Outlook, you can check the path to
your .PST file by right-clicking the root folder in the Folder List,
selecting Properties, then clicking the Advanced button -- the path will
show in a box.

I'm sure it must be somewhere, but I am really
frustrated. Yes, file extensions are visible. Yes, I am
searching hidden and system folders. I have searched for
outlook.pst, *.pst, outlook.*, and can't come up with it.

Re your other point, I got onto my root folder, which is
called "outlook today -[my name]" and right clicked, then
checked "properties" and "advanced" and got to
a "property page" about a program I am running called
Groupwise. Nowhere can I found the path to my pst file
(if it exists?).

Other ideas?

I'm not very familiar with Groupwise and its method of integration with
Outlook, so perhaps Groupwise replaces the "General" tab that most of us
see when we right-click Outlook Today, select Properties, and then click
the Advanced button. Another way you can find it with Outlook 2002,
assuming Groupwise doesn't mess with this also, is to go to Control
Panel, click the Mail icon, and then click the Data Files button -- all
..PST files you are actively using in Outlook will be listed and you can
select one and click Settings to get to the same General tab I described
earlier.

What exactly is wrong with your .PST file, anyway (I don't think you
specified in your original message)? Have you tried running the Inbox
Repair Tool (scanpst.exe) on it to see if you can find and fix any
errors? Scanpst.exe is located on your hard drive and you should be
able to find it easily with a search -- it's not hidden :-)

I tried your idea of going through the Control Panel, but
Groupwise messed with that also because I get the same
info about Groupwise, nothing about Outlook.pst.

The problems I'm having with Outlook include:
1) when I try to edit notes, it says an "unexpected error
occurred" then "the note will close and your changes will
not be saved."
2) when I try to edit calendar items, it
says "insufficient memory to complete operation." (I
have lots of memory.)

So I'm guessing there is something wrong with the pst
file and just trying to start fresh. But if you have
other ideas about what to do, please let me know. I ran
detect and repair and that didn't help. Perhaps
groupwise changes the name of the pst file and works
through that?

Like I said, I really wouldn't know where to start with the Groupwise
issues -- you'd have to find someone more familiar with the
Groupwise/Outlook integration for that. Did you try the Inbox Repair
Tool yet -- the one I mentioned in my last reply? It's not the same as
Detect and Repair...
