Outlook.prt file too large!

I have been running Outlook for years - presently using Outlook 2002. I receive a lot of email which I archive for my work. In the last year it started going into the "hourglass" mode for increasing periods. I checked the outlook.prt file and discovered that it had grown to over 566Meg in size. I have deleted thousands of emails and cleared them from the "Deleted files" directory. While the Outlook.prt file is no longer growing, the file size has not changed

Is there any way to rebuild this file to its needed size to prevent the periodic "hourglass" mode while it rebuilds to its present giant size? I looked on a friend's Outlook 2003 and it appeared to have this option available. Is it not available on Outlook 2002

Thank you for your help with this

Take care

Steve

You did mean to say "Outlook.pst" instead of ".prt", right? :-)

You probably just need to compact the .PST file. In the Outlook Folder
List, right-click the root folder of the file (usually "Outlook Today" or
"Personal Folders"), select Properties, then the Advanced button, then
Compact Now.

Jocelyn,

Yes, you are correct. I meant Outlook.pst. I performed your suggested fix and it dropped to 563Meg. I can't believe it is so large for what I have on it. I erased 3 years worth of archived emails and it still is huge. Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Steve

If you actually archived mail in yr default pst they will have been removed
to a seperate pst. By default Archive.pst. You can of course create
seperate,named, archive.pst's for each year.
Thus deleting archived mail will have no baring on yr default pst size.

You can go back into Properties to find the folder sizes for all folders in
the file...maybe that will help you track down the problem folder(s). Do
you have e-mail messages with large attachments, perhaps?

Also, I just re-read your original post and I'm curious -- what command did
you see on your friend's copy of Outlook 2003 that doesn't exist in Outlook
2002, with regards to .PST file sizes?
