I'm getting permissions/security errors when trying to
start Outlook on a W2000 workstation (standalone/home LAN)

In this case I am trying to set up Outlook and it is
saying I don't have permissions to open the Outlook
folder. Of course, I have set the Security settings for
everything for my personal login as well as am a Power
User with everything except "Full Control". I went to the
Office in the Startup Folder as well as in Program Files
and de-linked the inherit permissions and re-set them with
probably excessive abilities, at least for me, and still
no dice. How do I discover where the problem is?

Hi Mike. Someone here might know what else to check [I don't offhand] but you may
also want to post in one of the many Outlook newsgroups also such as the
configuration one. --- Steve

Steve,

I appreciate your response. I thought it might be related
to permissions because I've been having device permissions
problems (CD R/W, printers) where it doesn't go, without
returning an error code. Perhaps I missed a turn or
screwed it down too tight. An example is Webshots screen
saver which needed to write/create a BMP in C:\winnt and
it couldn't -- after all that directory is not wide open.
I finally created an empty dummy file with nothing in it
and set that one file wide open -- suddenly Webshots is
happy. Now, is that an app problem or W2000.

That's the kinds of challenges I've been fighting....

Again, thanks

Mike

Are you having problems while logged on as a local administrator? Some of the things
you mention such as cd burning or creating printers often require an administrator to
be logged on. The \winnt folder does not allow regular users to write to it in a
default installation. If you have changed a lot of permissions/security settings on
your computer you may want to see the KB link below on how to restore security
settings to default defined levels. --- Steve

Steve,

No, not as local administrator, but as a Power User. I'm
trying to give device access so people can write to a CD
without being logged in as Admin -- which obviously I
would want to avoid. Same with printers - not creating,
but using should obviously not be too very limited.

Some software for burning cd's has an option for regular users. I think someone
mentioned Nero has a "burn rights" utility.

As far as printers, you need to be an admin to install one, but if drivers are the
issue there is a security option for "prevent users from installing print drivers"
which disabling may help or there is also a user right assignenment for "load and
unload device drivers" that by default is only configured for administrators which
you might try to add power users. --- Steve
