Outlook NOT Synchronizing with Server! :-(

I am using Outlook 2002 to view messages on my server, on an IMAP SMTP setup. When I download messages from the server, they stay on the server until I delete them. However my cached message file is not synchronized with the actual server. I have mail messages in my inbox which are blank: they don't exist on the sever but Outlook doesn't remove them from the folder. When I try to delete these empty messages, they will not leave the inbox, though they will turn gray color, have line through them and a small document icon with a red x on it in small the attributes column. I also occasionally get the "Failed to Update Headers" message when Outlook attempts to update my messages. Is there any way to clean up my inbox? :-
