Are we ever going to get one? I noticed that Outlook 2003 still does
not have one.
Yes, Outlook does come with an NNTP (network news transfer protocol)
client. It's called Outlook Express. While YOU personally might like
to visit newsgroups, explain how newsgroups are a business task?
Outlook is part of Microsoft's Office suite which is oriented towards
business use. Outlook is a PIM (personal information manager) with
e-mail added. It isn't geared for miscellenous non-business use.
Outlook Express is a component of Internet Explorer, not of Office, and
oriented towards personal use (and thus it is free because there is
already a plethora of freebie or very cheap NNTP clients already out
there). Don't expect OE to have all the features of Outlook. Don't
expect Outlook to have everything in OE. They target different markets.
Newsgroups don't fit a business model for a PIM. Since e-mail and
newsgroup posts never intermingle anyway in the information store, why
do you care if separate products are used for POP3/SMTP and NNTP? If it
weren't for Forte Agent not directly and easily supporting multiple news
servers (as opposed to opening multiple instances that use different
config files), I'd probably use a better NNTP client than OE, like
Forte. I keep wondering how good is Mozilla's Thunderbird for
newsgroups (and maybe e-mail although I use too many other features of
that PIM to easily discard using its e-mail feature).
