I just upgraded to Office 2003. When I reboot my computer and run Internet
Explorer, it always tells me that Internet Explorer is not my default
browser and I have to set it to the default. But then the "Read News"
button in not available in IE. I then go into tools, internet options,
programs and it shows NOTHING for newsgroups. Then the only option is
"outlook express". If this is blank, then the "NEWS" button on the "GO"
toolbar in Outlook is not visible. If I put "outlook express" in the IE
program location, then the "NEWS" button on the "GO" works.

But this is a big hassle. Why does the IE blank out the news reader? Why
can't I select, Outlook as my default news reader? How can I uninstall
Outlook Express??? Why doesn't IE stay as the default browser??

Thanks,

Dan Berg

The settings required for Outlook 2003 are different than earlier versions,
but just as illogical.
First, you must now select Outlook Express (not Outlook) as your default
news reader in Control Panel > Internet Options > Programs...
Second, if OE prompts you to make it your default news reader when you first
launch it, answer NO and tell it to stop asking.
The IE settings are not usually in play here.

Why can't they just allow me to enter "Outlook" as the Newsreader in
Internet Options?????

Because that would be the wrong answer. Outlook is not and never will be a
news reader. They are only just now starting to reflect that reality in the
setup options.

So what you're saying is I can't use the "GO" "NEWS" from Outlook to launch
the correct program???

Why give me that opportunity if it is not going to work???

Seems way too confusing........

I'm not saying that at all. You can use Go > News to launch OE in news
reader mode--same as always.
