A small company has just purchased a SBS2000 server and I've been
asked to set it up and get users on it. I've never played with
Exchange before.

I have a dozen desks with w2k or XP on them and whatever version of
Outlook came with the dell package when it was bought. I'm in the
process up getting them all up to w2kSP3/XPSP1 patch level.

The server is at w2ksp3 + security-critical patches. I have not
applied any SQL or Exchange patches unless they were in SP3.

Where do I learn about Exchange workstation and server patches ?
What are the minimum patches ?

The user's hot button is a third-party/MSSql app uses the domain and
I'm rolling out asap. I've been checking "no" to the do you want to
use Exchange as I've been setting these people up.

Each user currently has a POP/smtp email account on our ISP. I don't
mind keeping that for now. At some point I want my ISP to talk smtp
to my exchange server.

Can someone point me to a cookbook for how to get these people onto
exchange server ?

I've found http://www.slipstick.com/ and have started browsing
it. There's a lot there but I don't see "getting started" info, yet.

Thanks

There is good documentation on the Exchange CD itself you might want to
check that. It's a chm file (on-line help)

If you want to read from the web I suggest you start here;
http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/techinfo/2000.asp

Please note that Windows 2000 is already at servicepack 4. Exchange is at
servicepack 3 and SQL is at servicepack 3a. Just for the record; these
servicepacks are individual servicepacks; Windows 2000 servicepacks does not
hold the updates for Exchange (regarding your remark; "I have not applied
any SQL or Exchange patches unless they were in SP3")

It's a good practise that when you start with a new install you bring it up
to date before configuring. If you ever need to move your Exchange server to
another machine it's a good practise to bring the new machine to the same
level of patches as the original one, do your move, check it, update it to
the latest patches and then to check it again.
