Hello I just switched to Rogers Hi-Speed, and now my Outlook is
leaving messages on the server and everytime I hit send/receive it
brings every message back. Outlook express does not do this, and
correctly removes them from the server.

I have the "leave on server" option unchecked.

what am I missing

thanks in advance

What version of Outlook do you have? If Outlook 2002, have you applied all
the service packs?

Hi Bob,

I also have almost the same problem with Outlook2000.
I also have the "leave on server" option unchecked.

All was running fine when suddenly (without changing any settings) Outook
leaves messages on the Pop3 server and spend a lot of time "checking for
messages to clean up off the server".
So i need to use the webmail interface to delete these e-mails.
But the difference is : I just receive once each email !

I have 3 pop account and it is the same problem for all => Outlook seems
involved

I will also send the OPMLog.log file and hope this will help.

Tell us if u identified a solution..

What version of Outlook are you using? This looks like either a log from
Outlook 2000 or Outlook Express. What I notice is that we issue a DELE
command to the server to delete a message, but it never responds - there
should be lines like "[rx] +OK" after each of the DELE requests. That makes
me suspicious that there's something wrong with the server.

Well, Outlook did issue the DELE command to the server to delete the
message. Sadly, there's a problem with Outlook 2002's logging that means
that the QUIT command (i.e. logoff) doesn't show up in the logs, and it's
that QUIT command that is critical here - the server is not supposed to
*really* delete messages until it receives a QUIT command from the client.
So your problem may either be a result of a buggy server or the result of
Outlook not issuing that QUIT command.

Do you have a dial-up connection to the Internet? One possible problem is
that the connection is dropped before Outlook issues the QUIT command. This
was a problem in the released version that was initially released that was
fixed in either SP-1 or SP-2 (I forget which).

Thanx Jeff for your answer.
I'm running Outlook2000 SR-1 and W2K-SP2, and a broadband connection (LAN).

As i didn't have any problems before, i suspected the server side (YAHOO). I
searched any Yahoo related issue but found nothing.
I also tried to change the time-out parameter in Outlook from 30s to 3mn :
this didn't fix the issue.

Fyi "Connexion à 'pop.mail.yahoo.fr' fermée" means that the connexion has
been closed.

But i found a QUIT command, that is sent only when i close Outlook (and when
some messages are stil on the server):
POP3: 15:24:45 [db] Connexion à 'pop.mail.yahoo.fr' sur le port 110.
POP3: 15:24:46 [rx] +OK hello from popgate(2.23.15)

POP3: 15:24:48 [rx] +OK 0 0
POP3: 15:24:48 [tx] QUIT
POP3: 15:24:49 [rx] +OK server signing off.
POP3: 15:24:49 [db] Connexion à 'pop.mail.yahoo.fr' fermée. // OUTLOOK is
now closed

When there are no messages on the server (deleted by myself), there are the
QUIT commands :

POP3: 16:15:39 [db] Connexion à 'pop.mail.yahoo.fr' sur le port 110.
POP3: 16:15:40 [rx] +OK hello from popgate(2.23.15)

POP3: 16:22:05 [rx] +OK server signing off.

Then a message arrives, is retrieved, and no more QUIT (time-out occurs on

With your setup, you shouldn't be having problems with Outlook closing the
connection on you. Another thing to look at - have you recently installed
any firewall or anti-virus software? Sometimes these can cause dropped
connections, though I've never heard of one only doing it after the DELE
command. Have you tried using Outlook Express or another mail client to see
if it can successfully delete from the server?

No changes with my AV and Firewall !

I tried with OExpress 6.0 and there is the same problem.
after 60s => time-out.

Yahoo's server could be involved in this time-out ?
because i have an other email account on a different server, and got no
problem.

Thanx Jeff for your answer.
I'm running Outlook2000 SR-1 and W2K-SP2, and a broadband connection (LAN).

As i didn't have any problems before, i suspected the server side
(YAHOO).
I
searched any Yahoo related issue but found nothing.

POP3: 15:24:49 [rx] +OK server signing off.
POP3: 15:24:49 [db] Connexion à 'pop.mail.yahoo.fr' fermée. // OUTLOOK is
now closed

When there are no messages on the server (deleted by myself), there are the
QUIT commands :

POP3: 16:15:39 [db] Connexion à 'pop.mail.yahoo.fr' sur le port 110.
POP3: 16:15:40 [rx] +OK hello from popgate(2.23.15)

If you were having this problem with a smaller ISP than Yahoo, I'd suspect
that it was the ISP's server that was the problem, but that doesn't seem
likely with Yahoo. Could you try disabling your AV and firewall software to
see if either of them could be causing this? The fact that they haven't
changed doesn't mean that they are not involved.
