outlook keeps sending files over 1 mb

It resends countlessly and never leaves my outbox unless I can catch it
taking a breath and delete it. This causes me to use yousendit.com for
larger files but it would be so much easier to use my own outlook. What
gives with this? I called my internet provider and they don't have a limit
on file size so it has to be microsoft. Surely I'm not the only one having
this problem.

Microsoft XP OS; office 2003 with all service packs updated.

Outlook has no limit on the size of the file you send unless you have an
Exchange mailbox (usually found in the work place or in schools). Exchange
is often set to have a limit to lessen the burden.

If you have antivirus configured to scan your incoming and outgoing email,
this can be what's impacting your large attachment. Open Outlook in safe
mode to see if this resolves the problem:

Start > Run > outlook.exe /safe

(note that there is a space between outlook.exe and safe)

If this is successful and you can send large files without interference, you
should disable your antivirus integration with Outlook. Don't worry that
your security will be compromised because it won't. Your on access real time
scanner will catch anything it's updated for. You don't actually have to
scan email. It often causes more problems than it's worth.

Depending on your brand of antivirus, you can get away with removing the
Outlook Add In, or stopping the email scanning service, or with some you may
have to uninstall the entire suite and reinstall it but leave out the
integration with Outlook.

Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) doesn't care about the size of your
e-mails. Only your actual e-mail service provider (ESP) cares about the
size of your e-mails. Your ESP establishes the maximum size for an e-mail
sent out through your account with them. So check with your ESP's quotas
regarding what they say is the largest size for a message that they will
accept from you. Since you never bothered to identify who is your actual
e-mail provider then no one that knows their quotas can tell you what they
are (although the ESP's web help pages probably mention the limit). Your
ESP may be your ISP but you didn't mention your ISP, either. It could be
someone other than your ISP which means your ISP doesn't give a gnat's fart
about quotas established by whomever is your ESP.

Also, when you attach a 1MB file to your e-mail, that does not mean your
e-mail's size grows by 1MB. All e-mail - and I mean all of it - gets
tansmitted as plain text. HTML is text with tags. RTF e-mail is text with
an attachment. All attachments are encoded into a long text string within a
MIME part in the body of your message. It all gets sent as text. Encoding
an attachment file into text means the text string that contains that
content will bloat to 137%, or more, of the original file's size. So when
you add a 1MB attachment, that will add, at least, 137MB to the current size
of your e-mail. Save a draft of your e-mail and look in the Drafts folder
in the Size column to see what is the actual size of your e-mail at its
current state. That's how big it will be as seen by your ESP.

You do NOT know that you have the same problem. You only know that you
might have some of the same *symptoms*. Don't hijack someone else's thread.
Start your own.

Also, inform the admin or moderators of your OfficeKB.com *forum* that they
need to add a User-Agent header that identifies they are using a web-based
gateway to Usenet (so they can leech off newsgroups to make their "forum"
look like it has a larger community). Not identifying their posts as
originating in a forum and then gatewayed to Usenet is considered abusive.
Let them lie to their own users but not in Usenet.
 
This is a different issue. Do you have antivirus configured to actively scan
your incoming and outgoing email? This is a symptom of that particular
problem. If AV is scanning a large file and you have email set to
send/receive more frequently than AV can scan. you may see the problem of
your recipient receiving multiple copies.

Disable any AV integration with Outlook. This won't compromise your security
since your real time scanner will catch everything it's updated for (if
you're dat files are out of date, so is your antivirus). Extend your
send/receive intervals. See if that improves the behaviour.

Whether or not yours is the same problem as dmharris's, the usual cause of
your problem is that you're scanning your outgoing messages with an antivirus
scanner, something that can never detect a virus and so it pointless.
Uninstall your AV program and reinstall it without the mail scanning feature.
You will be just as safe and it won't interfere with mail traffic.

Well, that's what it's called when someone usurps another's thread. My
opinion is that since your symptoms were the same as those of dmharris, it's
fine if you join the discussion. The real "hijack" is when someone jumps in a
thread with a completely different set of symptoms.
