Outlook keeps looking for old server after migration

We recently migrated to a new exchange server (also the new
domain controller), which has a new name. The Outlook user
profiles now keep trying to send data to the old server's
name despite having changed the exchange server name. I
can't find any references to the old server in any setting,
except that Outlook hangs on a send/forward request, then
the "Requesting data from server" clock window pops up.

Can anyone offer help as to why Outlook is still looking
for my old Exchange server?

Have you migrated or moved to a new mail server? Their is a big diffenrence;
when you move you'll change the X400 addresses which Exchange uses. So when
you reply on a message that was send from the old server it tries to reply
to the old address. Also when the names are cached (the autocomplete
function for instance) the address also point to the old server.

To resolve this;
1) Clear the local cache by deleting the *.NK2 file from the profile
2) do not reply to old messages and when you do delete the "To:" field and
use the addressbook to address the mail.

Hope this helps!

I suppose we haven't migrated or moved. We set up the new
exchange server and used the exchange merge (exmerge)
utility to transfer the data between servers. Then each
user had to change the server name in their respective
Outlook settings.

I tried flushing the nk2 file, but Outlook is still
searching for the old mail server, particularly when you
look for personal contacts stored in the user's exchange
account. The contacts appear under the "Contacts"
link/folder, but after hitting "to" on a new mail message
(after flushing the nk2), still fails because it's looking
for the old server.

Any further thoughts? Thanks for your reply.

Have you created a new profile for the users or did you edit the one they
had? Editing doesn't really work. Recreating the profile based on the new
server is a better practise as there probably are still references in the
profile to the old server. You can see if this is the case by reviewing the
subkey's of the following registry key.
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\Outlook]

Hope this helps!

That would have been easier for me, thank you for your
advice. I did remove and reinstall the individual address
books, and that seems to have resolved the problem.

Thanks again.

Delete the Outlook profile, and recreate it through Control Panel.
Then set up the connection to the Exchange server.

Ehm, why do you reply to a post that is already solved and why do you post
the same answer as already posted? :-S
