When I get the emails at home, it deletes the files from the server, so, I
turn it off in the morning,
so I can see it during the day, when I'm at work.

However, something has recently happened, so that, it keeps getting my
emails at home, even after I've closed it.

I've looked all through the options, but I can't find out where to turn this
feature off.

any ideas here?

And that would be WHICH version of Outlook?

If Outlook is truly unloaded (check Task Manager's Processes tab for
outlook.exe) then there is no way an application that is not running
could be yanking e-mails from a mail host and putting them into a
local message store.

Maybe it's about time to change the password used to login to your
e-mail account. Maybe someone hacked in.

Sorry - it's 2003
and it's still running in Task Manager
it's not showing in the Taskbar - or in the other one over on the right
(WinXP) - sorry but I forgot what that one's called.

Outlook (and Word) have the nasty habit of not fully unloading when
told to exit. There are various explanations, like plug-ins not
unloading, but I've seen it happen for a fresh install of Windows and
a fresh install of MSOffice. Wait a minute after exiting Outlook and
then kill the rogue outlook.exe process. It shouldn't happen all the
time but it does happen.

Presumably by exiting Outlook you are actually exiting it. Minimizing
it to an icon in the system tray is NOT unloading it from memory.

There is an option to leave emails on the server. If you set this at
home, but not at work then you won't have to worry about outlook running
at home. However, it's quite possible that you then won't be able to see
email at home that you saw at work (because your work system removed the
email from the server before your home system noticed it).

This is how I used to run. Now I work from home, so the problem went
away. Working from home also fixed the quality of the coffee. My dog's
happier as well. I sometimes wonder why I ever went into the office.

Do you have some sort of blackberry-type device attached to your computer?
That seems to be a very common reason for Outlook not closing properly...

In addition to the other comments, perhaps modifying your policy of deleting
after downloading at home would be palliative.

The problem is not about leaving them on the server - - the problem is that
it keeps running in Task Manager after I shut down the program itself.
How do I fix this?

File/Exit

And, for a thread hijacker, I care why? How are you (posting from
SWBell) related to Elmo (who posts from RoadRunner)? Different
monikers and different ISPs = different users.

Some common reasons why Outlook will not shut down completely when you click either the X or Exit:

1. PDA synchronization software with your PDA in the cradle.
2. WinFax Pro (especially 10.02 in Outlook 2003) - contact their support for an alleged fix.
3. Franklin-Covey Plan Plus!
4. COM Add-ins.
5. Mail reminder add-ins that keep a stub of Outlook open in the background to check for new mail and fire reminders.
6. Anti-virus/firewall programs that are set to scan incoming and outgoing mail.
7. Some versions of Skype (upgrade to latest to fix).

Seems that every version of Outlook has had this nasty habit of
hanging around long after you want it to go away.

KnockOut (http://sunflowerhead.com/software/knockout/) is a great
little utility that will tell you if Outlook/Word is still running,
and let you forcibly terminate. This is probably the only realistic
way to solve your problem.
