outlook is sending something although nothing in outbox

Hello,

I wonder if anyone has the following problem. I use Outlook 2003. With
each check the software is trying to send 1, 2 emails although there
is nothing in the outbox. I have scanned my hard drive a couple of
times using 2 different antivirus software programmes (both with
current updates) and nothing. No virus found. What can cause such
behaviour. Can you help?

You may have some read receipts that are being sent - they won't show up in
your outbox.
