Hello,

I've been running outlook 2003 for a few years now on a terminal server .
..and not really had many problems .. however lately more and more users are
messaging me about email getting hung up in the outbox .. while closing and
reopening the application will allow them to send .. it seems strange to
have this in the first place..

any ideas?

Are you using Exchange?
Does this happen to OL2003 users *not* using TS?

Sorry, I should have known better to include more info.

No, they're just pop3 accounts running on a windows 2000 terminal server.
at first i thought maybe it was a problem with the file size of the PST ..
but there is such a variance in size between users .. it's even happening to
new users that I create .. I've tried running a repair on outlook but it
hasn't done anything.

Where are the PST files located? They need to be on the C drive of the TS
box, note - MS doesn't support accessing PST files across a LAN/WAN
connection. How many users are logging in simultaneously when this happens?
What are the hardware specs of the TS box itself?

The PST files are located on the local F:\ drive and they have been for
about 4 years with no incidents up until recently.

It's a windows 2000 TS
2gb Memory
dual 2ghz xeon processors
RAID 1 (c and d partitions) (2 hard drives total 35gb each)
RAID 5 (f drive) (3 hard drives total 35gb each)

there are generally about 25 users online at any given time during the day,
cpu usage is usually about 8 - 15% and memory usuage is usually about 40%.
However this problem isn't limited to during the day .. it can happen when
one user is online late at night remotely.

I shouldn't have said C, sorry. As long as it's a *local* disk, and not a
network drive, that's fine. However, how big are they, and do your users
regularly delete items & compact the PST files? IF you do so, does this
problem recur?

I would probably want way more memory than that with 25 simultaneous users.
Can you reproduce the problem?

Sure you can't get Exchange? PST files are de debbil.

They vary from new to 1.5gb, believe me, i'm trying to get out of the PST
thing, but it's a money thing.. Items aren't usually deleted but they are
archived to another file .. although I don't htink i've ever done a compact
... but that hsouldn't affect a new file??

You really ought to look into Exchange. If your company had the budget for
TS and CALs for same, I'd sure hope this was something your company was
considering!
If you don't have a huge network/tons of users, look at SBS2003.
Items aren't usually deleted

ever done a compact .. but that hsouldn't affect a new file??

No, but are all the other users with their big fat PST files, logged in, or
out, when this new user with a miniscule file is trying to work? Test
without *anyone* else logged in.
