outlook inbox

I have downloaded my messages and it shows (23) next to "inbox" but the
actual messages aren't there? This is the first time I have seen this, I am
confused.

Could the view be filtered?

Do you have sub-folder in you inbox? If there is a + sign beside your inbox
folder you do. If you do, click it and the messages may be in the
subfolders.
