Outlook IMAP Issue

Becky

I am using Outlook 2002 with SP3.

I've recently added an IMAP account. It usually works fine, unless my
computer looses connection to the internet. As I'm constantly testing
dialup accounts, this happens several times a day.

As soon as Outlook realizes I've been offline, IMAP ceases to function. It
doesn't matter that I'm actually back online through our T1. My POP3
account continues to function normally.

No new messages are downloaded. When I try to read a message in the preview
pane, I see the error:

"This item cannot be displayed in the preview pane. Open the item to read
its contents."

When I attempt to open the message, I get a window:

"Can't open this item. Unable to download item contents. You must be
online to perform this operation."

If I go to File > "Connect to <server name>", nothing happens. No error,
but it still won't work. If I check "Work Offline" and then uncheck it
again, still nothing happens, and it still won't work.

I can create a *new* account to the same server, and that second account
will work fine -- at least until I temporarily go offline agian.

The only way to fix it is to close Outlook and reopen it. I like to keep
Outlook in the same place on the task bar, so I'd perfer to not do this.

I was hoping there would be a patch to fix this, but there isn't. It does
appear to be a bug.

Does anyone know a workaround for this that's better than restarting Outlook
or creating a new account every time this happens? Thanks!

Becky: I have the same problem but with OS Win 2000 SP4 and Office/Outlook 2000, using AOL's IMAP. I feel I may have some option set wrong but have tried everything. Apart from tearing my hair out I have solved the problem by using Thunderbird. It really does not suit me and would like to go back to Outlook but Thunderbird is much nicer than when I last tried it some years back - so I await with interest if you get some help on this one!:) Don
