Outlook has problems after installing BCM 2007 - Help!

I have office 2007 small business, and installed BCM 2007. Now outlook is
not set as the default mail client, even though it is checked in the options
box. This generates a pop up every several minutes telling me to set it as
the default mail client. Other things are also not working, and this is very
frustrating. I have tried to reinstall Office, and it goes through the setup
wizard (from the CD), and then tells me that it cannot proceed. I have tried
to remove Office, and have a similar experience. How can I move forward?

I haven't heard of this problem before, but I'd check that Office and
BCM are both at the same service pack number; installing BCM RTM on
top of Office SP1 may cause the symptoms you describe.
 
I installed them from the same disk, and have resisted upgrading to SP1,
because I am afraid that that will not fully install, and cause even more
problems.
 
Does anyone have additional suggestions?

I can't uninstall from Control panel (MS XP Pro), or repair, or
reinstall...... I am out of ideas short of reformatting the drive, and
starting over (not my preferred solution).
