Outlook hangs when "responding" to an email if Word selected as editor

Outlook still hangs when responding to an email using Word as editor.
Outlook gives a message sometimes that says it cannot find Word or that the
Outlook version doesn't match the Word version. In this case, I have
Outlook 2003 sp2 and Word 2003 sp2.

Any suggestions other than not using Word as editor?

Hi Jeff,

Answer is "not yet," ... but eventually the answer will come along. I'll
let you know when it comes up. Of course, a work around is to set Tools/
Options/ Mail format to plain text, but then you lose some of your automated
functions transitioning from MS Word and your personal templates. Plz let me
know if you find an answer before me.

Cheers,

Gil

Hi Gil,

I got your post off the MS website. I too started having this problem a
couple weeks ago. I have tried doing the Repair option on Outlook, but it
doesn't fix it. My symptoms are exactly the same as yours.

Have you found a solution yet?

Thanks

Thanks. While I did not have any add-ins running, it still had the same
problem. So I renamed my normal.dot to normalbak.dot, causing Word to
create a new normal.dot and now Outlook is responding fine with add-ins.

I'll probably re-create my normal.dot file and clean it up somehow.

Thanks,

Gil

Hello Gil,

In my case, it was an Outlook Add-on that was causing the problem. Adobe
Acrobat of all things. Once I disabled that - it worked. You might start by
temporarily disabling all Word add-ons. See if the problem goes away. If so,
then re-enable each one until the problem recurs and you have found the
culprit.
