Outlook hangs when attaching office file

In the last month, outlook will hang for ~30 seconds when I attached an
office file in a e-mail message. This doesn't happen when I attach other type
of files (i.e. zips, pdf, txt, etc). Any clues as to what is going on?

Perhaps e-mail scanning by your anti-virus program?

I thought of that and have disabled the virus scanning of e-mail
messages.

Try not loading any add-ons by loading Outlook in its safe mode
("outlook.exe /safe").
