Outlook Freezes while Downloading

I am running MS Outlook over a VPN connection to my
corporate server. Everytime I receive a new message
everyting in Outlook freezes until the receipt is done.
If I get an e-mail with a large attachment It could take
minutes. I can switch to other apps but I can access any
e-mails that I may have already had opened and I can't
even continue typing an e-mail that I was working on.
This is really annoying, I can't believe it is by design.
I am on connected over Cable Modem so I don't think it is
a bandwidth problem. Are there settings I can play with
so that this won't happen?

I'm in the same boat - when I connect over VPN Outlook will just freeze, giving no indication of what it's doing. It's so frozen the UI won't repaint when I drag something over it. It wasn't like this in 2000 that I can remember - 2003 almost seems fundamentally broken; however, given I haven't see a huge hugh and cry over this on the list yet, I'll reserve judgement
