When I download email from my isp to outlook express the
attachments are deleted before I open them. I have worked
on this for a month. No one has a solution. Thankyou.

You have not worked very hard, look at
OE/Tools/Options---security, uncheck the 4th box.
Be careful about viruses.

You attachments are not deleted, just blocked, double click
the email to gain access to previous attachments.

Be careful

Is there any message? Is the paperclip grayed out? What happens when you
click on the paperclip?

Starting with SP1, Outlook Express does this by default, for any
file type which *can* contain a virus. It's not a virus checker,
doesn't actually check the attachments, and this doesn't mean
that there actually is a virus there.

Such attachments *are* very risky. You often see advice not to
open attachments from people you don't know. I think that that's
one of the most dangerous pieces of advice you see around,
because it implies that it's safe to do the opposite--open
attachments from friends and relatives. But many viruses spread
by sending themselves to everyone in the infected party's address
book, so attachments received from friends are perhaps the *most*
risky to open.

Personally I think what Outlook Express does is good; I never
open executable attachments at all, except from a *very* few
trusted sources, and then only when I'm expecting them. But if
you want to remove this safeguard, it's easy to do so: go to
Tools | Options, and on the security tab, uncheck "Do not allow
attachments..."

Greetings --

Nothing has been deleted.

Outlook Express' default security settings are simply trying to
protect you. OE has no way of telling whether an attachment actually
contains a virus or not, so it temporarily blocks any of those file
types that could potentially contain a virus. In Outlook Express,
Tools > Options > Security, uncheck the "Do not allow attachments to
be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus" option, assuming
you trust the source, of course. The wiser course of action, however,
would be to modify your list of unsafe files, as outlined in the KB
articles below:

a month...and you didn't come up with anything...the answer is right in you
own pc...in HELP and SUPPORT....security.....

Maybe get a friend to show you some XP things...very basic things at
that.....

on this for a month. No one has a solution. Thankyou.

As you found out, many people have the solution, the answer is, was and
has been right here.

Next time you're puzzled about something similar, go to
http://groups.google.com and enter microsoft.public.windowsxp in the
search window, you'll see a bunch of XP groups listed.

Now type a keyword or phrase in the search window such as Outlook
Express Attachments and see if your answer is there, I got a bunch of
hits using that expression and the very first one answered your
question.

You'll save lots of time and save others from answering the same
question multiple times, Windows XP has been around for a couple of
years now and many questions have already been asked and answers found.
If you don't find an answer, then is the time to ask here!

Thanks in advance!

Something that's escaped everyone responding so far - if you have Norton
AntiVirus /Internet enabled - check the "protection" setting. If it's on
HIGHEST level of protection, reduce to Medium. As a business friend of mine
discovered (with help from me) the Highest setting automatically rejects
attachmentsm e_mails go straight into Deleted folder - disconcerting when
the attachments are electronic invoices from his suppliers ! Don't know if
same scenario applies to other Anti_Virus progs - worth checking if your
problem is not already solved.

This may not be the right answer in your case, but is certainly one
possibility.
