I am retired and have been using Hotmail almost as long as I have been using
a computer online. I have always used Outlook Express as my primary way of
sending and receiving e-mail. When hotmail upgraded a few years back, I was
still allowed to use hotmail in Outlook Express, although new users were
only allowed to use online. I have never needed a premium e-mail account
and everyone knows my e-mail address. I use the computer for genealogy
research and have thousands of e-mails stored in Outlook Express and keep
all my notes (e-mails) in Outlook Express on my local computer. I never
have to worry about filling up my e-mail inbox since I move all saved
messages to my local computer. I wanted to upgrade my computer, so I saved
up from my social security enough to buy a new laptop. The only operating
system available was Vista. I have used XP for 5 years and within the last
year or 2 with Service Pack 2, it has become very stable and I am very happy
with it. Now I have my new computer and find that I can't use it for my
e-mail because Windows Mail isn't compatible with Hotmail and Outlook
Express won't even run with Vista. Now I'm told my only solution is to
spend more money to get premium e-mail which is not a one time expense but a
subscription or upgrade to a newer version of Office and use Outlook, which
I'm not even sure will work. I am perfectly happy with Office 97 in which
everything works except Outlook. I've thought about putting XP on the new
computer, but I would have to buy a full copy without being able to get an
upgrade price. I would consider XP an upgrade to Vista as it is much faster
and easier to use. So my situation is that I have had a new computer for 4
months and am not able to use it for most of my work, so I am still using my
old computer.
So I would like semeone to tell me a solution without having to save up and
spend more money before I can use my new computer. Is there another program
thar would allow me to download my e-mails to my local computer. I already
tried to use Thunderbird and it didn't work. I even got a new e-mail
address with Gmail and used their free pop mail, but it doesn't completely
work with Windows Mail. I can send but can't receive. Google doesn't have
a troubleshooting routine designed for Vista.
Is this problem a view of what Microsoft has in mind? For everyone to pay
them by the month and they have control of all your e-mails and you are not
allowed to download anything to your own computer.
