Outlook Express

Outlook express opens and works nomally, but it will not close. Once I
attempt to close it, it will not respond to any further commands.

? Outlook Express does not exist in Vista.
 
Gosh, I bought a new laptop with Vista and just assumed my email was still
Outlook Express. So, it is Windows Mail that will not close. I guess that is
even worse, since Windows Mail surely should work properly in Vista, wouldn't
you think? Anyway, the problem still exists; it works fine until I try to
close it, then it won't respond to any commands. Thanks Gary.
 
Are you using either McAfee or Norton antivirus?
As a test, uninstall your antivirus, then try WinMail again.

Yes, I am using McAfee AV. It came preloaded on my laptop. I'll give your
idea a try. If McAfee is causing the problem, what is the solution; do I need
to buy a different antivirus program?
