Clean up your message store folders, especially the Inbox.
I regularly encounter systems with several thousand messages in the
Inbox folder, and an inbox.dbx file size of several hundred megabytes.
If you want to keep certain messages for a long time create folders
for them, and give them meaningful names such as Family, Jokes, Garden
Club, etc etc and move the messages that you want to keep from the
Inbox to the appropriate folder.
Likewise with your Sent Items folder - if you want to keep copies of
your sent messages use the same folders where appropriate or create
additional ones. I like to keep my "sent items" folder down to about
the last 60 days worth of outgoing messages.
And get in the habit of periodically emptying your Deleted Items
folder - I dump mine several times a day because of the amount of
incoming spam that I get, a lot of which goes directly to Deleted
Items thanks to message rules.
And at least once a month you should use File - Folder - Compact all
folders.
Good luck
