I'm using outlook express and I've heard there's a significant security
risk associated with clicking on a link in an e mail message.

What's the security risk of clicking on a link in an e mail message?

First of all...

Access MS Newsgroups:

You're accessing the newsgroups by a forum that is leeching the posts.

OE, or any email client, is just yet another way for malware to get into
your system. Properly secured - the system - and it becomes only a matter of
being aware of the problems. The largest would be phishing - people
pretending to be something other then what who they are in hopes of getting
your personal information.

Pesky Startup Apps:

Don't open unscanned attachments, read your email in plain text, and type
the URL into the address bar for any important site you might go to.

Links in OE have exactly the same danger level as links anywhere else: They
may take you somewhere you don't want to go. This especially includes email
saying its from a financial institution. The majority of such mail wants
you to go to a link that will ask you for information you shouldn't give so
that they can access your account or credit card and steal your money and
identity. It's up to you to be careful about what links you click.

the danger is the link may be hyperlinked to a program or a web-page with
Spyware/viruses on it, so take great care on what you click on and make sure
you know who is sending it to you.
