Hi,

I want to change the location of the "identities" folder to another
partition of my hard disk. is it possible? if yes then please let me know in
a stepwise manner so that I can configure it to store my emails and address
book in another drive. In case my c: drive crashes, i can get back to my
email.

Regards,

Hello Ravi ....

Totally possible and a good idea, I think. I've done it for the past few
years, and it's an easy process. You'll have to bear with me tho' because
right now I'm working on my backup Windows 98 machine due to a yet
undetermined hardware problem on my XP PC.

The files you need are stored in [C:\Documents & settings]:\APPLICATION
DATA\Identities\{[bunch of numbers & letters]}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\.
To check the current location in Outlook Express: right-click on any
newsgroup and display its Properties. Under the General tab, you will see
"This newsgroup is stored in the following file:..." All you need to do is
to create another location and copy everything there.

Then in OE, go to Tools > Options > Maintenance tab; click on the "Store
Folder" button and copy & paste your new location. If you have more than
one identity, be careful to keep them straight. I put a small .txt file in
each Outlook Express" folder to identify them.

Once you're done, restart OE and make sure the new location is being used.
You can then delete the files from the original location(s). You may want
to keep the folders tho'; sometimes XP baulks a bit at removing its original
folders.

To change the location of your e-mail file in Outlook, just do a search for
your outlook.pst file. Simply create a new location and copy your files
over. In OL you'll need to designate the newly--moved file as your storage
file. In OL, go to File > New and click on Personal Folders file (.pst).
Then navigate to the new location and select your outlook.pst file. You may
have to do the same thing with the archive.pst; I forget -- it's been a
while

I'd recommend keeping the file structure of the newly-created locations the
same as the original.

Hi Hoppy,
I have checked my outlook folder, its location is D:\Documents and
Settings\ravi\Local Settings\Application
Data\Identities\{B078FAE9-4FD1-414C-9F5F-AE5705659B62}\Microsoft\Outlook
Express
where i have all the dbx files of email and newsgroup. But i didn't found
the pst file. I searched for *.pst and no result was displayed.

Please explain me step by step what I need to do and also explain me what I
should do once I format c drive and reinstall windows to get back to my
mails and newsgroup items as earlier.

Regards,
Ravi Verma

Did you already move the folders? The default location is normally on the
C: drive.

Forget about the outlook.pst file. I mis-read your original post and
thought you used Outlook for mail.

Your mail is in the Inbox.dbx, Sent Items.dbx, etc. files which are located
in your [drive]:\Documents and Settings\ravi\Local Settings\Application
Data\Identities\{B078FAE9-4FD1-414C-9F5F-AE5705659B62}\Microsoft\Outlook
Express folder. Oh - before I forget -- I'm not sure where your address
book is; you may want to search the MS Knowledge Base. There are also
several Outlook Express newsgroups on the Microsoft server.

I already explained to you how to change the location of your OE folder --
in the 2nd, 3rd & 4th paragraphs of my previous post. I'm confused; what
more are you asking?

Also - I'm curious as to why you're re-formatting your C: drive. Do you
have a dual-boot system?

Ravi

Go to the following website.

Inside Outlook Express - Backup and Restore - Complete Clone Backup:
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/backup/clone.htm

This site will guide you, step by step, in backing up and relocating the complete file structure for your Outlook Express files, identities, accounts, address book and custom settings.

Hi Hoppy,

Ya, ur curosity is natural. actually, i am a tech support in assam, india
and i m trying to customize the system of my clients so that the system
uptime or recovery time can be minimized.

My client offices have computers connected to small LAN and also to
internet. They don't work on maintenaining their computers. They face proves
and I have to visit them to troubleshoot and rectify the problem. Most of
the time I have to backup their outlook emails, My documents, etc. and then
format the c drive and reinstall windows and then each programs, then
configure the network, internet, programs, outlook, etc. etc. its painful
and a lenghty process. Moreover, I dont get much time to troubleshoot the
problem either because I have to serve many offices and I can't sit on one
office for the whole day. Therefore, of late , I am trying something like
partition cloning. I clone the c drive(where windows resides) and keep it in
another computer over network. I make a clone of root drive of each computer
and restore it where any software problem arises. everything is fine accept
My Document folder and Identities folder. Then I changed the location of my
document folder, to another drive say d drive, so next time I restore the
clone, the files in my document remains intact since they are in d drive and
gets automatically connected to that folder because I customize the system
and then keep a clone of drive c. Now, my only problem is Identities folder.
If I restore the clone, the emails are restored till the date when I made
the clone. So I am trying to configure windows in such a way that all emails
goes automatically to another folder say d:\email and then I will make a
backup of c drive so that next time when I restore c drive, the emails will
remain intact and after restore it will automatically get connected to
d:\email.

I am not looking for backup solutions, because occassionally I am keeping
backups in another media. My goal is to customize windows in such a way
which will save my troubleshooting time. In case some hardware problem
arises then only i will be using my backups.

Most frequent problems are related to viruses, fiddling around by the
client, etc. and which gets solved just by restoring the backup without any
data loss.

I hope now you know why I am trying to change the location of my outlook
identities folder. But in case of Identities what I am looking is that once
I restore the clone, it should automatically connect to the d:\email folder
and show the outlook inbox straight away. like I do in case of My Document
folder, i create a folder d:\mydocuments and copy all files there and then
right click on the my document icon on desktop, properties and change the
location to d:\mydocument and then make a backup of my windows drive, i.e. c
drive. so that when a user clicks on save button the file automatically goes
to d:\mydocument and which he can open from the desktop icon of My Document.
In the same way, I want to change the location of identities to d:\email and
also the accounts and news settings should be changed to another drive so
that when I restore the clone drive, I don't need to create the accounts
again. everything should be backed up in the clone.

I hope I am clear with my idea.

Ravi Verma
