Outlook Express won't retain password.

I found it necessary to do a destructive recovery on my
HP Pavilion 7935 desktop (Win XP) and after all was done,
Outlook Express won't retain my password to retrieve
mail. It continues to ask for it no matter how many times
I enter it in the options box and hit 'apply'. When I
close the box and reopen it, the password is gone.
OE will allow me to send mail but not receive mail
without reentering my password.
I have downloaded any and all 'updates' and patches that
would appear to apply but nothing thus far helps.
Any ideas anyone???
