I have winXP and OE6 with AVG Plugin. When I press Alt+S or *send*
button to send mail, the message content gets wiped out if I am using
AVG plugin.
What is wrong and how can I fix it?

If you're using the free version of AVG, the plugin is designed to work
with OE5, not OE6. It can be made to work with OE6 but with alot of
messing about.

I lately observed that it wipes out message content whether plugin is
checked or not.

I don't know what is happening here.

What is better AV that is free?

There's 3 or 4 available through here:
http://www.pricelessware.org/2004/PL2004SECURITY.htm#Anti-Virus

None of the free ones have a /great/ track record.

AVG is (finally) pretty good, but besides the problem you are having (you're
not the only one), AVG /still/ identifies viruses that aren't there. False
Positives have always been an AVG "feature", maybe it's to make you think it's
better than other AVs because it finds viruses they didn't. Their history:

Avast (Alwil) has a free version:

AntiVir (H+BEDV) has a free version: The test data is bad, but there are a
lot of users that swear by it.

F-Prot for DOS (Frisk) has a free version:

If it were myself, I'd _buy_ NOD32 (eset). Very small, very unobtrusive, and
is top rated:
