Outlook Express Takes Forever to Open Email

The last couple days Outlook Express takes about two minutes to bring up each
individual new email. Before it would bring them all up in a matter of
seconds, but now it says "receiving message 1" for about two minutes, then
when that email comes up it says "receiving message 2" for another two
minutes, etc, etc. It doesn't matter what size the email is. What could be
causing this?

Internet Explorer 6: How and Why to Clear Your Cache:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie6/using/howto/customizing/clearcache.mspx

1. Clear your cache, accepting the option to delete all offline content.

2. Resize your cache (e.g., 50MB or lower).

3a. Move any messages that you want to keep out of Sent Items and Deleted
Items folders and into other local OE folders you've created for archiving
(saving) such messages.

3b. Move 99% of your messages in your Inbox folder to other local OE
folders, too.

4. Compact all OE folders:
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm#compact

General OE Caveats:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working
offline". More at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm

- Do not cancel Automatic Compacting, should it occur, and do not attempt to
close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if Automatic Compacting
is taking place.

- Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It can cause
corruption (i.e., loss of messages) and provides no additional protection:

If I move messages I want to keep into a local OE folder, will I still be
able to Search these messages or sort them by sender or subject? I often
need these features to find info in old emails.

Yes, just use Edit | Find message for that folder.

For your issue though, try clearing the Inbox and then compacting it and see
if that makes any difference. It could be a problem on the server side with
your ISP.

I deleted most messages and did the compaction but its still slow. I think
I've discovered the problem. The last few days I've been getting a Windows
Security Alert telling me that my anti-virus program is turned off. I use
AVG but it now says its not connected and I don't know how to get it working
again.

When the email is attempting to open, it says "AVG is scanning email", but
if the program is not working, that is probably the problem. I can't find
another free-version of AVG to downland. Anyone have a direct link to a
download site?

Remove your current version of AVG from Add/Remove Programs.

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 8.0
http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download?prd=afe

Do a *custom installation* and opt out of e-mail scanning.

After that download this freeware program and run it. Do it often.
