Hi, I am told that my Operating System is corupt and that I must do a "Restore" on my computer which will cause me to lose all of my files and saved emails. What I would like to do is to save all of my email files to a CD or Diskette so that I ould reload them into Outlook Express after the Restore.

I cannot figure out how to do this. I've tried to "export" but the only destination offered is regular Outlook or MS Exchange (which I do not have). Can anyone PLEASE help me to learn how to save my email messages to CD or Diskette?

Thank you for any guidence you can share with this newbie.

Hi Carl
hope this will help you out, i do this whenever i restore windows.
Go to windows explorer ,click on tool , click folder options, click on show
hidden files and folders , click apply.
Ok your way out of there , click on your hard drive , click on documents and
settings , click your name , click local settings ,
click aplication data , click identities , click on the big long number ,
click microsoft , click outlook express.
Copy and paste all those dbx files in a folder , call it outlook express
backup and burn to CD.
When you reinstall them do the same only go in safe mode to install them.
May have to go to safe mode to copy them to , once in a while i get a in use
message for one of them.
Hope this helps ya out.

Hi Carl: Thanks for the suggestion. I will try that, but can you tell me more about this "SAFE MODE" and how to go into it? I am not familiar with that term. Sorry to be such a pain. I am not very skilled in this sort of thing.

Carl:

I followed your directions and I was able to save most of the files to CD, but there were 5 files (actually email folders) that I could not copy. Can you tell me how to do this again in the "Safe Mode" that you mentioned so that I might be able to save these 5 files.? Thak you for your time. I really appreciate the help.

Hi Carl
To get into safe mode , Restart yor PC and while it is booting up repeditaly
tap the F8 key (twice per second) , and
you will be given a bunch of options , scrool up to safe mode and press
enter. Then follow directions, answer yes when asked.
When you are done restart the PC again and you are back to normal.
Hope this helps ,I am no MVP or anysuch person.
Just a 64 year old -art playin on his computer.

You can move the .eml files to a folder on a USB memory stick. You can also
just do a burn on a CD of all the mail folders.
Afterwards when the operating system is in order you can move or copy the
..eml files to a folder in your Documents. Your e-mail software will open
them for rereading where ever they are stored.
I regularly move e-mail files that I want to keep intact to a storage
folder. In your case at the moment an external drive or other facility is
the choice. Any other files (images or documents) should get the same
treatment. Make a list of the software you will have to reinstall.
