Able to send emails and even receive some spam emails in Outlook Express,
but mysteriously unable to receive emails from family members.

[Note: Recently reformatted hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP, SP3,
Outlook express 6.0, Internet Explorer 8 and installing various types of
software.
Internet connection and other email services work OK]

TEST 1 Outlook Express sent to two other e-mail services in my name; succesful
TEST 2 Reply from same other e-mail services in my name to Outlook Express ;
also succesful
TEST 3 Sent out various e-mails to family. They claimed to have pressed SEND
on replies, but none arrived. (None of them are blocked messages so cannot
think why)

What have I missed or done wrong? Please advise

Thanks - Ian

Have you asked the experts in the Outlook Express newsgroups?

Contact the company who is maintaining your email account. Your
Outlook Express only reads what is in this account. Several companies
(know commonly as Internet Service Providers (ISP)) can also ad "SPAM"
email filtering. Several times, these "SPAM" filters can be set too
high and blocks every incoming emails.

An Outlook Express specialised newsgroup sounds like a good idea. I did not
know they existed. They are not on the list to the left here; could you post
the URL and I will try there. Thanks,
Regards - Ian

[x-posted to OE General]

1: Are the messages you are not receiving on the server's Webmail site?

2: In Tools | Accounts | Mail Accounts, make sure all your addresses are
correct, especially the Reply address. (Which you can leave blank if you
want the replies to go to the same address sent from).

Is each sender and recipient using a different e-mail provider or, at least,
have *physically* separate mailboxes? Some e-mail providers are cheap in
that they provide just one mailbox with multiple aliases to it. You get
different e-mail addresses but they are point to the same mailbox. This is
sometimes referred to as a "family plan" setup: one mailbox for everyone in
your household. The problem then might be that e-mails sent from that
mailbox that go to the same mailbox are seen as suspect or spam e-mails;
i.e., the sender and recipient are the same (as regards the mailbox despite
different e-mail aliases being used). A family or shared mailbox also means
recipients may interfere with other: one recipient yanks their e-mails from
the mailbox but all e-mails are yanked so the other aliased users don't see
any e-mails. Some shared mailboxes will deliver only those e-mails that
match on the login/username but may have a server-side option to enable or
disable that behavior.

Did you use the webmail interface to your e-mail account to check all
folders, including Junk/Spam and Trash, to see if their e-mails showed up at
all? Is the server-side spam filter configured to immediately delete or to
move the suspect/spam e-mails into a folder, like the Junk folder? If set
to immediately delete (which actually deletes them instead of moving them
into the Trash folder), you won't be able to ever find any e-mails that the
spam filter thought were spam. Typically the Junk/Spam and Trash folders
should get purged of old e-mails at some regular interval, like a week after
being received. That gives you some time to check for false positives but
you will have to use their webmail client to check if using POP (which only
about the Inbox folder; if you use IMAP then you may see the Junk/Spam and
Trash folders depending on the server-side folders to which you subscribe).

1: Server is Orange. Huge number of spam messages, (which I have removed),

but could not find family messages. Do they perhaps expire after a certain
number of days?

2. Have cleared the Reply address now. Still curious as to why should I be
able to send but not receive? Is there a way to test my email account for
receiving?

3. What is the email address or telephone number to check my Freeserve
username is still valid with Orange and that the account is "live"

Thanks for your help - Ian

======================

1: If the messages are not on the server, it is either an account setting,
or you exceeded the limit Orange gives you on their server. In your
account properties / advances, remove the checkmark to leave a copy on the
server, or set it to delete after X days.

2: Same answer as above.

3: Got Google? You don't know your ISP's telephone number? Should be on
your bill.

Use your browser to connect to www.orange.co.uk. Click on "Check
email" and try to sign into your Freeserve email account. If
your sign-in is successful, then you will know the account is
still live. Otherwise, you will receive an error message,
"Invalid username or password. Please try again".

Alternatively, you will find contact details at
http://help.orange.co.uk/orangeuk/support/selfservice/index.jsp

If you have a subscription Freeserve mail account, it should
remain live, provided you continue to pay your monthly
subscription.

If it is a "pay-as-you-go" dial-up account, it will be suspended
if you haven't dialled in within the previous 219 days (via the
expensive 0844 telephone number).

You will find further details via the help pages at
http://help.orange.co.uk/orangeuk/support/selfservice/index.jsp.

Be aware that you are using the awful web interface to participate in
this newsgroup. It's the slowest, clunkiest, most error-prone method
of using the newsgroups there is. Do yourself a favor and switch to a
newsreader, such as Outlook Express, which comes with Windows XP, or
Windows Mail, which comes with Vista. See
