Hi,
We are a school that has an Nt4.0 server running network
and is also running MS Proxy Server on it. Most of our
workstations are running either windows 98 or NT 4.0
worstation O/S's. We have recently upgraded some of the
machines to windows XP Pro.
The problem I am having is this: Internet Explorer runs
fine. It picks up the proxy setting automatically and
browses with no problem. however, Outlook Express will not
connect to our ISP's mail server and of course email does
nothing. The mail account is set up correctly but when we
run it, it keeps getting the message that the connection
to the mail server (servername) could not be made. What do
I have to do to get this working? Any help will be greatly
appreciated. Please email (e-mail address removed).
Thank you,
Paul Herman

Hi again,
I forgot to mention that our Nt 4.0 server is the only
serveron the network and it is a domain controler. The XP
machines connet to the domain with no problem. It is just
OUtlook Express not running that is the problem.
thanks again,
Paul Herman

Did you install the Microsoft Proxy Client software? If you haven't, how are
you expecting to connect to port 119 or 143 via the NT? There should be a
share on the NT server called mspclnt which has the proxy client software.
This will allow you to use more ports than just 80 and 443.

When you install the client software, there should be an applet in control
panel "wsproxy"? that you can use to change/test the connection to the
server. If I'm not mistaken, this requires netbios, so you may need to
create and entry in lmhosts with and entry for the domain controller - best
to chech how the other systems are configured first though.

Regards,
