Outlook Express is an email and newsreader program.
Gmail is an email service provider.
You can use Outlook Express with Gmail as well as your ISP provided email
service by adding a new email account to Outlook Express.

On Outlook Express toolbar; click on 'Tools' -> 'Accounts' choose the
'Mail' Tab then click on 'Add',

* enter the requested information about your account in the 'General' Tab,
* in the 'Servers' Tab
* select POP3 for 'My incoming mail server
* enter pop.gmail.com in the Incoming mail (POP3) slot
* enter smtp.gmail.com in the Outgoing mail (SMPT) slot
* enter your gmail account name in the Account mail slot
* enter your gmail account password in the Password slot
* check 'My server requires authentication' and click on 'Settings'
* check Use same settings as my incoming mail server
* the settings in all other Tabs should be the same as for your ISP provided
email accounts.

Or you could just use the Gmail instructions for setting up Outlook Express
to read Gmail.

You seem to be badly confused here, and are comparing apples and
oranges.

Outlook Express is a program, one that is used to get and send E-mail.

GMail is a service that you can use for E-mail. They are *not* opposed
to each other. You can use either, both, or none.

If you use GMail to provide your Email, you can get and send your mail
on the GMail web site (which I don't recommend) or you can use a
standard E-mail client to get and send it. Such E-mail clients are
programs like Outlook Express, Outlook, Eudora, Pegasus, Agent, etc.
How you want to read and send your mail, and which of these you want
to use, is your choice.

If you don't use the GMail web site, you *must* use a program like one
of those, and for most people Outlook Express is easiest, since it
comes with Windows.

You say "Tried savng it the GMail way and it still sends from Outlook
Express 6" but I don't understand what you mean or what you're trying
to accomplish. Please explain what "savng it the GMail way" means.
Sending it from Outlook Express is normal. If you don't want it to
send (and read) in Outlook, please explain why not, and exactly what
you do want it to do.

Phil Weldon gave the instructions for setting up Outlook Express to
use GMail with it. Did you follow them?

I am slightly learning disabled and apologize for errors in orignal posts. I
want to change the email address I use when I click on a link or click on a
picture from provider A to provider gmail. I followed the instructions and
checked afterwards, and it shows the new address as the default, and it
appears I was successful. When I try and send email now it show a cannot
connect message after about 20 seconds. I am not sure what I did wrong and
don't know what to do to correct it. Thanks for any and all that can help
me. Dorothy

Unfortunately, you must explain EXACTLY what you did. Otherwise we are just
guessing.

If nothing else, please provide more details.

As of now, it is not clear what you wish to do. It may not even be possible
to do what you wish to do but that there is another way of accomplishing the
same end.

If, as you say, you are 'slightly learning disabled', then face-to-face help
at your computer system could be a lot more useful than long-distance
newsgroup exchanges. Sequencing of events and exact details are extremely
important in setting up computer programs. It is helpful to WRITE DOWN
every step you take, and WRITE DOWN all the details of how the computer
responds to the changes.

My guess is that you are now trying to use Outlook Express as your email
program, and have not entered all the necessary information to enable
Outlook Express to contact the Gmail provider; thus it 'times out'.

You must either explain in more detail what your goal is, or you must
EXACTLY follow the directions given. Think of a computer system as the most
persnickety grammar teacher you ever had.
