Outlook Express Hangs

I've just recently run into a small problem with Outlook Express that I've never experienced before. When I open the application, it takes approximately 30-60 seconds to open. Also, I noticed now that I get the same problem when right click a contact name in the lower left corner and pick "properties". The proggy has never crashed on me, but it hangs badly under these (and maybe other unknown) circumstances. Why would it start doing this out of the blue? I originally dismissed the problem about a month ago, thinking it may just be an issue with my smtp., but the problem has proven to be something residing within my computer software. It's not a problem that in my mind constitutes reformatting the hard drive, so we can just rule that option out... I'll deal with the problem if that's the case. Because once the application does open, everything runs smoothly, and quickly (unless I click on the properties, like I mentioned above)

Can anyone make any suggestions or recommendations? I don't have and abundance of unread emails, or a large amount of read ones either. If there's an option to archive mail, I haven't ever used that, and I'm running 512 k/2700/333 ram. So hopefully any of those possibilities can be ruled out. Like I've mentioned before... this never use to happen. HELP!

Open Outlook Express and from its Toolbar select:
Tools > Options. Under the "General tab", uncheck
"Automatically logon on to Windows Messenger",
then click on "Apply".

Have you ever done any maintenance? Go offline, Go to IE, Tools, Internet
Options, Delete Files, Check the box to include offline content, click ok -- if
you have never done this or it's been a while -- go take a shower, get coffee,
take a nap, (this will take a long time)

After this finishes, close IE, go into OE, (make suer you are offline still),
Go to Tools, options, maintenance, UNCHECK the box for Compact in Background.

Click Apply/ok

Do some basic maintenance on your inbox, -- move ones you want to save -- make
some new folders that are not within the In box, check your sent messages and
see if there are any or all you can delete, empty your deleted mail box.

Then go to File, Folders, compact all folders. This again may take awhile
