Outlook Express E-Mail Deleting Problems

I am trying to help out a senior citizen with subject
problem. She is Win XP HE, 256 MB Memory,20GB Hardrive
and uses GTE.NET For her ISP.

Her Inbox was loaded with many repeat e-mails and because
of different times she would attempt to Delete them, I
noticed different dates for the same e-mail. It seems
like the more I tried to delete, the less I would gain on
them.

I scanned her files with Norton Anti-Virus, suspecting
maybe an address virus....Norton found no infected files.
I went up on the internet and updated Norton which
involved getting quite a few files. Ran scan again and
still no infection. I shall try to teach her about
Updates, Scanning Disk and Defragmentation, which I know
will help her towards better computing.

I was finally able to clear out several hundered files
from Inbox and then permantely delete them. I still
think the same problem wil;l continue and, for some
strange reason, I am thinking maybe one of her programs
may be causing the problem.

She has the following programs;MS Word, Outlook, Excell,
Access, and Power Point.

Can anyone tell me what is going on. I have never
witness such difficulty in deleting programs and seeing
so many of the same e-mails.

Thanking you In Advance;

Please add....It seems like above problem has something
wrapping around. Does that make sense?

Is it possible that someone selected the leave a copy of the message on the
server option, which would result in the same messages being downloaded
again and again? In the main window of Outlook Express click the Tools
menu, click Accounts, click the Mail tab, click the mail account that has
the problem (to highlight it), click the Properties button, click the
Advanced tab, near the bottom where it says Delivery, make sure that the
Leave a Copy of Messages on Server doesn't have a checkmark to the left of
it. If there is a checkmark, click on it to remove it, then click on the
Apply and OK buttons. Then close Outlook Express and reboot your system.

Multiple downloads of the same email has several possible causes:
all emails are not downloaded when the mail is checked.
corruption of the file that stores the download information.
virus scanner interrupting the download process.

Tools, Accounts, Mail tab, highlight the mail account, Properties button,
uncheck Include this account when sending and receiving.
Create a new Identity.
Turn off virus scanning of emails.
If the new Identity is only downloading one copy of an email and you want
some of the old emails, go into the old Identity, delete unwanted emails,
Tools, Options, Maintenance tab, Store Folder button, write down the
location.
Switch to the new Identity, File, Import, point to the old location.
