Does anyone know of a freeware program that would allow me to backup my OE
folders and messages and then restore them to a fresh install?

Outlook Express Freebie Backup (OEFB)

Overview :

OEFB has expanded to include some additional features. While it is still
a basic backup program, like the original version, it is useful for
maintaining Outlook Express message stores and registry entries. It's
appearance is not one that is "pretty", far from that, it's idea was to
provide the utilities for a simple backup program and forget the idea of
being pretty. So, please forgive it's ugliness, maybe one day I'll do a
make over of it but that's not in the foreseeable future. NOTE: You must
have Administrative privileges or at least ability to have access to
allow registry changes. Quick overview of features: Complete Backup and
Restore with just one button (each - ok, so it's two buttons). Quick
backup of current selected Identity. Show the path list to the select
message store (DBX files). Show the path list to the Address Book. Search
for DBX, IDX, MBX, WAB and WA~ files used by Outlook Express. Generate a
text or HTML report of Identities and files. Easy change of Address Books
and have multiple Address Books available. Backup and restore of Address
Book file. Backup and restore of DBX, IDX, MBX files used by Outlook
Express 4, 5 and 6. Backup and restore of registry entries. Change the
{USER_ID} of a registry file to another. Change the username of a
selected Identity. Create a new Identity. Clone an Identity for use on
the same computer. Remove an Identity. Combination of some of these
features can allow a user to copy and Identity from one computer to be
placed on another computer. While Outlook Express 4 is not supported, the
ability to search for those message stores used (IDX/MBX) files can be
done, backed up but not restored. This limited use is included to allow
the user to find these files so they may be imported in to Outlook
Express 5 or 6.

Yeah - Windows. Just copy the *.dbx files (or folder containing them) and
put them back in the same place on the new install.

dadiOH is correct. You really don't need a backup program for OE.

I just keep my OE store folder on a separate hard disk. When I do
a clean install of Windows, I just point OE to the old store
folder, close and restart OE, and everything is there.
