Outlook Express and Internet Explorer 7 have died

All of a sudden, when I tried to open Outlook Express, the programme simply
would not open. I have tried a system restore; I tried downloading Internet
Explorer 8; I bought and ran system registry repair tool; I uninistalled IE8
then went back to IE7, then uninstalled that and re-downloaded it. At this
stage both IE7 and OE failed to open. Well, IE 7 starts to open then shuts
down. I have backed up my OE messages, of course, but now have no access to
them. I have tried to import them into Outlook, but ti won't work,
presumably because the OE programme isn't functioning. My lap top runs Vista
which of course has Windows Mail which is not compatible with OE messages so
I can't just shift my messages to my laptop and view them there.

Can anyone please tell me how I can restore IE7 and OE, or how I can import
my OE messages into Outlook? Other ideas also very welcome. Many thanks.
 
Thank you, Bruce, but I am not at all sure I am doing the right thing. It
doesn't help when it says things like "You might prefer to ..." I am not sure
if I have to do certain steps. I've created the new shortcut but all it does
is open the notepad file.

Can't I just download and install IE6 - or is that now impossible? In nany
case, even IE 7 won't now open.

I am finding the suggested solution beyond my skill level. I have Outlook
and would be happy if I could just import my OE message into that, but it
won't work, I presume because of the problem with OE. Is there any way I can
import my message into Outlook or into Windows Mail on my Vista lap-top? Is
there anywhere I can just download OE?

I wish you had continued this from my original reply so the crossposting to
OE General remained. I wanted more OE volunteers to see this.

You can't just download OE6. It is part of IE6 and they are both part of
your operating system. If you could download it, it would refuse because you
already have it on your machine. Fixing it is the only answer.

Can you manage to delete Folders.dbx? That isn't hard to do.

Close OE, (obviously), and then find your message store.

In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K3, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default
marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable
Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options
Icon | View, or in Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options | View.

In Windows Explorer, follow this path:

C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name\Local Settings\Application
Data\Identities\{Long string of letters and numbers}\Microsoft\Outlook
Express

Find Folders.dbx and delete it. Reboot and see if OE opens now.

To get OE, you need IE6:
Yes, you can still download and install IE6 (which contains OE6):
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie6/downloads/default.mspx

While you're there, don't forget the Service Pack/s for IE; they're
right there under the IE6 info.

It can also be download from many other sources.

Also there is IE7 and IE8. Start with 6, get OE working, then go get 7
or 8, whichever you want. Pay attention to the service packs they may
say are necessary to have. I -think- 8 requires XP SP3, not certain.

Thank you, Bruce, that worked fine. Worth noting, perhaps, that the Folders
file would not delete in normal Windows mode ( it said another program was
using the file) but only in Safe Mode.

Now I must try to rescue IE.
